Tussar Silk

Origin and nature of Eri silk

Eri silk is produced by the Eri silkworm, which feeds mainly on the leaves of the castor oil plant. Unlike mulberry silk, eri silk is harvested without killing the silkworms, making it a more sustainable and ethical option.

1. Ethical production:
Eri silk is obtained from cocoons opened by silkworms before they are processed, making it a more animal-friendly alternative.

2. Soft texture, comparable to wool:
Its texture is often described as soft and fluffy, similar to wool.

3. Thermal properties:
It has excellent insulating properties, retaining heat in winter and providing coolness in summer.

4. Durability and resistance:
Eri silk is renowned for its strength and resistance to wear and tear, making it suitable for everyday use.

5. Rustic appearance:
Elle se caractérise souvent par un aspect plus brut et texturé que la soie de mûrier, ce qui lui confère un charme unique.

6. Polyvalence:
Eri silk can be used for a variety of products, including clothing, blankets, scarves, and accessories.

7. Hypoallergenic:
It is naturally hypoallergenic, making it a good choice for people with sensitive skin.

8. Various colours:

Although Eri silk has a natural cream or white colour, it can be dyed in a wide range of colours.
1. The combustion test:

Take a small sample of thread or fabric and hold it close to a flame.

Real silk burns slowly, giving off a smell of burnt hair and leaving crumbly ashes that resemble powder.

Synthetic imitations melt, smell like burnt plastic and leave sticky residue.

2. Examining texture and shine:

Eri silk has a soft, silky texture and a natural sheen that is difficult to imitate.

Irregularities in the weave and imperfections are signs of natural silk, whereas synthetic fabrics often have a perfect weave and uniform sheen.

3. The crumple test:

Rub the fabric between your fingers. Natural silk will produce a characteristic slight ‘rustling’ sound.

Synthetic imitations will remain silent.

4. Observation of the reaction to water:

Wet a small part of the fabric. Natural silk will absorb water, while synthetics will tend to repel it.

100% Pure Eri Silk is a more environmentally and animal-friendly alternative to traditional silk, while offering beautiful natural qualities.
